Valérie Plante will abolish the "Bonis Denis" executive bonuses

Montreal - September 11th, 2017

In brief

Introduced in 2016 by the outgoing administration, the executive bonuses programmed nicknamed “ Denis Bonis” at the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM), based on the number of tickets given out will be abolished following her election on November 5th. These bonuses can account for 8% of the salary of executives when they reach their ticket quotas. In 2016, the SPVM had a quota of 717 000 tickets for the year which is roughly 1 ticket per minute or 1 ticket per car registered in the city of Montreal.  According to Alain-Robert Nadeau, lawyer and doctor in constitutional law, the executive bonus program is unconstitutional and goes against the rule of law.

Quotes

« Public safety should dictate whether a ticket is given, not an executive who wants a bonus at the end of the year. The “Bonis Denis“ increases the cynicism that the population has towards the police. Montrealers should not be burdened by the large amount of quotes destined to reward executives at the end of the year. » - Valérie Plante, leader of Projet Montréal and mayoral candidate

« Tickets have a negative impact on the the lives of citizens. Not only do they affect the wallets of individuals but they lose demerit points and it makes their insurance premiums go up. We need to limit programs that can tempt overzealous officers which is what the “Bonis Denis” has done. » - Daphney Colin, city council candidate for Pointe-aux-Prairies
